A Family Sign
DIY Craft Ideas
I’ve been thinking for a while about some DIY craft ideas for my yard, some that involve my grandchildren. They LOVE to craft when they come down…and I love showing them new projects. Now…they weren’t here…so I did this myself. As they come to visit, I’m going to have each of them hand paint there own names. I never intended this sign to be perfect…I could have stenciled the letters…or used a silhouette….but that was completely NOT what I was looking for here. This is a project for the kids!
I spent absolutely $0.00 on this. I found some fence pickets that had fallen and were laying behind a friend’s fence. She was just about to through them in the dumpster…when I slid in and saved them!! WOO….GO SUPER GRAMMY!! lol
I found four of them. Before letting the kids mess with them, remove all the nails. You could buy new pickets…but what fun would that be? And…they would have this awesome patina!!
I needed six small cross pieces for the names…and one full picket to hold them. The full picket will be turned point down…so that it can be drove into the ground after you attach the names.
The remaining three pickets were 70″…so I cut each name sign approximately 22″….I didn’t really get picky about this either…like I said, I wanted this to look old and hand made. This also left me three…for future grandkids…
After cutting them I cut a point on the ones that didn’t have one. I used a pointed picket for a template and just cut the others to match.
Then I painted each name with a cute place or street name to go with it. Again…I didn’t get too picky…as each child will do their own when they come to visit.
Then I just placed them randomly on the full picket and put two screws in each one to hold it at a random looking angle.
I decided to try these with computer fonts…and this is how they look….so you take your pick. I think they are acutally….equally as cute with the hand writing…and when the kids paint them….they’ll even mean more!

This is GREAT! I am currently working on something very similar to this for our backyard. I love that you got your things for free {I wasn’t that lucky…lol} and I love that it is so large — ours will be smaller. I also love that you chose to use their names. We plan to have ours show our favorite places and how far those places are from where we live. What a great way to incorporate your grandbabies! Thanks for sharing!

Love this. I’ve thought about doing this for a while. We have a boat dock and deck and pool so I thought of doing the signs pointing to each of them. Having the kids do them is even better though! Thanks for the inspiration! And happy SITS day! Tammy @ noskinnies.com
