Last year I was snooping around my local Goodwill and found this little desk….and a dresser to match. They are pretty cheesy….almost plastic feeling….but the shape…..TO DIE FOR!!!! At $12 for the pair….I couldn’t resist.
I didn’t need the desk….I needed a night stand….so in a blog to follow…I’ll show you what I did with this piece. I loved the dresser….but failed to get a before….so the desk pic is to show you what it looked like before….you get the idea.
With this stuff as slick as plastic….it had to be sanded, that was the first order of business. I used a very light sandpaper….no need to get too heavy handed…just needed a little “roughness” so that the paint would stick good. Remember the rule for painting….clean….dull….dry!
Red is my favorite color….as you will probably find out in future projects. Red it was going to be for the dresser! I believe the color was dried tomatoes (interior latex)….the perfect red!
Once I got it on the dresser….I decided it was a little plain for an “old-looking piece….so I used an antiquing glaze to tone it down.
Antiquing glaze that I use…there are many out there…usually where you buy paint |
The edges then needed “something” so, they got a aged copper wax finish. (the one in the photo isn’t copper…it’s silver, but you get the idea) That…needed a patina….so back to my paint closet….I got a minty green (again…interior latex) and just touched every so often on the copper to “age” it.
wax finish available at hobby stores |
I also got on an auction site and found some new handles….the dresser was missing one, and I couldn’t find an exact match. They too, got the copper treatment.
VOILA! |
This is now….one of my favorite pieces of furniture…..The drawers are wonky….but I’ll work on those someday. In the meantime…I keep stuff in it that I don’t need all that often…phone books and the like. Does anyone even use those anymore? I keep EVERYTHING in my phone! Do Y’all like shopping at Goodwill?
Have a great morning!
Love Y’all!

Thanks! I Love Red….I’ll have to jump over and check out your site!!!
Tammy I love it–and Im not a big fan of the color Red. I dont have a good will very close to me, but there are some church thrift shops that are a bit pricey. Yard sales give the better deal around here!
