Easy Painted Mason Jar Tutorial

If you spend any time at all on Pinterest, you’ve probably come across all kinds of jar crafts. In particular, pretty mason jar vases are a hot decorating trend. You can make the same jars you see on Pinterest – and even see sold on Etsy – with my easy painted mason jar tutorial.

Here’s how easy it is . . .

Supplies:
Mason jar or recycled jar
DecoArt Multi-Surface Acrylic Paint (in color of your choice)
Sandpaper or sanding block
White rag or paper towel
Decorative ribbon (in color of your choice)

Step One: Paint your jar with two thin coats of multi-surface paint. Let dry in between coats.

I love using multi-surface paint on glass because – as the name suggests – it can be used on a variety of surfaces with outstanding results. This paint is self-leveling and dries quickly.

Step Two: Using sandpaper or a sanding block, sand the jar here and there in a horizontal motion. Apply different amounts of pressure to sand off varying amounts of paint just in certain areas. Include any raised areas to bring out the designs or markings on your jar. As you sand, periodically wipe away the dust with a white rag or a paper towel. Continue to sand until you’re satisfied with how it looks.

Step Three: Cut the ends of your decorative ribbon with pinking shears to make a decorative edge on each end.

Step Four: Wrap your ribbon around the jar several times and tie in a simple knot.

I purposely chose a ribbon that would match the color of our Magnolia Jane flowers that I trimmed off of our trees. I love how the ribbon pops against the aqua paint.
