Mercury Glass Chandelier
When we first moved to this house I acquired a couple of glass chandeliers from our niece and her husband. I just have a Love affair going with chandeliers…and I think it has now….turned into obsession. I’ve since decided that there is something I don’t like about these chandeliers….Mainly….I HATE that I can see the wiring through the glass arms…so I had a thought about how to turn them into a recycled treasures! I’m gonna start today by turning this one into a mercury glass chandelier.
I took this one down to try it out…..Now…this could’ve gone several ways, but I was just dying to try this technique on at least ONE of these.
Here she is before….
This is what I did……
FIRST…..NEVER do this with the light hanging!!!!! You’ve been warned. If you don’t feel comfortable doing the wiring portion….find someone who does…..or just do it on something besides lights. This will work on any clear glass. Speaking of which….you can also take an old chandelier…and turn it, as well as a lot of other things, into a candle holders. Just thought I’d through that in there.
Clean it up well….be sure it’s clean and free of dust…..however….with this technique a little wouldn’t hurt….so don’t get too obsessed with that part.
Take some “looking glass” spray paint. I got mine at the hobby store….but you can find it in several places….I want to say I’ve even seen it at wally world too. Spray a light coat on….just enough that it doesn’t run. repeat this several times so that you have a fair amount of paint….while it’s drying a bit….collect up a spray bottle…and put a mix of half and half vinegar and water. When your paint feels fairly dry….spritz it with your mix. Just experiment a bit….but dab lightly with a paper towel or rag. Now….what I did that’s a bit different is I took black flat spray paint…and spritzed it here and there a bit in the spots that the paper towel cleared. Keep repeating this until you have the basic look you like…and then spray very lightly with a coat of the looking glass…..it will ad depth….but you can do this off and on during the vinegar process also. You’ll see…..it just looks sooooo stunning.
Here she is now….
I’m telling Ya….the pictures….do her NO justice! She’s absolutely STUNNING!!!! That is what I call a diamond in the ruff…..or a diamond in the mercury!
I’m thinking what I might change….Maybe black crystals, Red?, pink, turquoise….OMG……too many options!
Well? Do Y’all like her better now….or before? Tell me…..what project do you think would look good with this technique?
Love Y’all!
