I’m really not sure when it happened….but it’s been going on a long time….and I’m sure Y’all do something similar. When our kids were little…any distance in a vehicle with three rowdy boys and a bullied little girl…was just excruciating. What one of my boys didn’t think up…the others did. They were the “typical” ornery country boys….on steroids!!! In fact, I wonder sometimes, how I got them out of the house with my sanity in tact….and I have friends that will argue that I didn’t! lol And any mother would probably agree…that even the BEST of friends….cooped up in a vehicle….will fight over the air they breathe.
I remember when I was little…we sang songs…my sister and I and our mother….but this game…does NOT work all that well with boys…try it….but you better have some tranquilizers on hand…and I’m just not that patient. As technology advanced…things got quieter in our transport…but the challenge to occupy the four of them….was on going. They read some…but seriously?!!? Have you ever tried to read with three other juveniles sitting arm to arm with you? NOT!!!
As one of the ELITE…vacation challenged, and shopping challenged I feel that I have become one of the most knowledgeable on entertainment for trips. lol One thing our family does…is Talley license plates…. We try to find one for each of the states….I’m not sure we’ve ever done it completely….but on our trip to Yellowstone…we found all but two….and we also managed to get two from two different Providences in Canada! This time….not so many from the United states…but one from Canada…and believe it or not…one from Kuwait!!! Now….how the heck did that get here!!!???!!!
I’ll never forget when Sara was just a tiny thing…we went to Oklahoma to help my recently widowed grandmother move to Texas…to be closer to our family. She and my grandfather had lived in the country for forty years or more. We were all country bumkins…and Dave and I were still living in the country! Grandmother had chickens….and we didn’t want to abandon them….so between all of us…we managed to get them rounded up…Dave and I decided to just take them to our farm. Lol Well…the fact that we were taking chickens home…didn’t come to light till we got to Grandma’s. Now…being the hillbillies we were/are…we would NEVER rent a U-Hall. We loaded up our horse trailer and it being enclosed…we just stuck the chickens in some cardboard boxes…and poked holes in them. Some hours later, we decided to make a stop at a KFC for dinner. Well…our kids had occupied themselves that morning chasing down chickens….so you can imagine what those three boys looked like when we all spilled out for our first restroom and lunch break. Dave and I…being the animal lovers we are…decided we better check on the chickens..and give them a drink. We unlatched the trailer gate…and to our surprise….got flogged with the very creatures we were trying to save!!! Somehow the box had come open and the chickens were all loose in the trailer! Several of them came flying out of the trailer! lol….luckily (for the chickens….not us) we were in a fairly crowded parking lot…so the chickens kind of funneled toward the building. So here we were…all in work clothes…our kids looking like orphans…chasing chickens in the parking lot of the KFC!!! LORD! Then after we had caught all but one….we’re all still chasing the solitary escaped Poultry…arms flying in the air…running around hooping and hollering like a bunch of hillbillies….the chicken….flies straight into the drive up window! Good Lord….I really don’t think I could have been more humiliated in all my life! But of course…no one every died of humiliation….and it’s been a good source of laughter ever since.
What do Y’all do for entertainment on trips?
Love Y’all!

Tammy that is the best laugh I have had in a long time. I can see it so clearly in my head.

Lol…I’m glad! At the time…it was awful…at twenty…everything of this caliber is…but it’s funny now! I don’t think I could have even told this story twenty years ago.
