My gardens in fall
My gardens are singing their last Hooray of the season. I’m so bummed….but also sort of relieved. I think the lawn will only have to be mowed once more this fall…and the struggle to keep everything watered is coming to a close….I guess if we didn’t have to go through winter…we wouldn’t look forward to spring. I have to admit…spring is my favorite season….even though here…spring can be a windy dirt bowl. The emergence of life is just exhilarating at the end of a cold dark winter. Winter means hot cocoa….a warm fire….and Christmas….I guess if you sum it up….it’s not that bad!
Even though I’m a little sad about winter approaching…I have to admit, I love gardens in the fall. Some of the most beautiful colors happen this time of year! Look at mums….they have to be one of the most versatile and hardy perennials you can plant for your fall gardens. All the the herbs and succulents are getting with it. the bees and butterflies are busiest withing gardens in fall….preparing to hibernate causes a flurry of activity. One of the prettiest flowers of the fall garden is the goldenrod. It smells good, and looks amazing in a bouquet. Goldenrod gets a bad rap….but generally it’s the ragweed that causes the problems that Goldenrod plants get blamed for. Fall is the best time for transplanting cuttings also. Everything wants to be going dormant…giving new starts an opportunity to focus on their roots instead of new leaf growth.
At any rate….enjoy the last Hooray of my gardens!
